Questions:
If we were made in His Image, does he view us as male or female?
Answer:
Yes, God sees us as male and female. These are the only two sexes God created, despite the confusion we see in our world today reguarding this subject. Men and women are given distinct roles. Men and women are equal but not the same. In fact it is their diferences that are so perfectly designed one for another that makes their differences so beautiful. The Bible reveals that the difference in design is to demonstrate the following
To be different and still function in perfect harmony is part of what God wishes to reveal through the creation of man. In God we see three persons in perfect harmony and function. God the Father. God the Son. God the Holy Spirit.
God created the sexes (Male and Female) for his own glory. By this we mean that God chose to reveal something about His character and in the creation of man. From the beginning they were both ONE:
Gen 1:26-27
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
Then God took the woman from the man and brought her to him.
This created order helps us see God’s intention that man and woman should live in perfect harmony one with the other. This is at it’s best when they submit to God and His order.
Gen 2:21-24
21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,
“This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
In Gen 1 we see that “Man was created, male and female created He then.” In once sense, the relationship of man and woman, in marriage, is designed to reflect who God is. God is love. God is in perfect harmony with himself. The Doctrine of the trinity shows forth that there is no disharmony in God and at the same time this perfect unity has order and structure. Marriage also has order and structure to reflect the glory of God.
Marriage (the relationship between a man and women) is designed to reflect and reveal the marvelous charter of God.
Finally,
One day when we are in heaven we will no longer marry (Matt 22:30) which makes clear that the sexes are part of God’s creation to reveal the glorious unity within the God head and the relationship of God and His church.
This relationship of man and woman is a mystery designed to reveal who God is and how he related to His glorious church (those who believe in Him.) The more we meditate on this relationship and how God designed it the more we see a beauty and reflection of God.
Ephesians 5:31-33
31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
In regards to the Gospel, man and women are both responsible to God and each must obey God and follow God by faith. In this regard, men and women are equally responsible to God. None the less, each is given a particular role and responsibility within the context of society, marriage and the church. To erase the differences that God has placed in men and women is to deny the very order and character of what God has created.
Man apart from woman does not faithfully reflect God -and – Woman apart from man does not faithfully reflect God. It is when we see the perfect union and harmony and order of these that we are able to see the image of God better reflected in His creation.
Marriage is designed by God for this purpose, to manifest God!
